From the introduction: “Knowing about the marvelous works of God in the past should produce in us

a sense of worship,

a thirst for closer acquaintance with the God of revivals,

prayer that He would again visit His people in our day,

and anticipation of further seasons of mercy.”

Fire in the Thatch; The True Nature of Religious Revival, Evangelical Press of Wales, 1996.

“I have observed and seen in Wales the most glorious work that ever I saw … the gospel has run over the mountains … as the fire in the thatch” The book’s title comes from this quotation, written three centuries ago describing a time of revival sent by God. What is revival? What happened in revivals of the past? How have times of revival been evaluated, by both friends and foes? How has revival been misunderstood? Can we have revival like that today?

Some of the chapter titles covering the subject are:

  • What is Revival?

  • Revivals: Their Rise, Progress and Achievements. Preaching and Revival

  • Priorities in Revival

  • Adding to the Church

Other chapters deal with particular persons and places, including

  • George Whitefield

  • Richard Baxter of Kidderminster England

  • John Davies in Tahiti

  • A fascinating contrast between the two 19th century revival Welsh leaders Humphrey Jones and Dafydd Morgan (“Dafydd”, pronounced approximately dav-eth, is the Welsh name for David)

The last chapter, Why no Revival?, deals with today’s conditions.

The chapters in this book are independent and may be read individually, suiting your interests and available time. This is one of the best introductions we know to the way God has revived his church with special outpourings of his Holy Spirit.
