Basics of the Reformed Faith Booklets, various
authors.
This series of booklets from
Presbyterian and Reformed, now P&R Publishing, is intended to introduce
lay readers to Reformed distinctives, and are designed especially for
use by Presbyterian and Reformed churches. All are short, usually under
40 pages. The library has received all of the eight titles
available.
What is a Reformed Church? Stephen Smallman. The author is a PCA pastor
in Philadelphia. While teaching new member classes, Smallman writes, “I
got a sense of the kind of issues that are in peoples’ minds as they
struggle to understand appreciate the core doctrines and ‘traditions of
the church’.” Here he discusses the Reformed view of Scripture, divine
sovereignty, the covenant, the law, the church, and the kingdom.
What is a True Calvinist? Philip Graham Ryken. The author is the senior
minister of Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Philadelphia. The
doctrines of grace help to preserve all that is right and good in the
Christian life: humility, holiness, and thankfulness, with a passion for
prayer and evangelism. … The true Calvinist ought to be the most
outstanding Christian—not narrow and unkind, but grounded in God’s grace
and therefore generous of spirit.
What is True Conversion? Stephen Smallman. See above for author
information. Smallman explains the roles of the Father, the Son, and
the Spirit in conversion. For many people who have been converted to
Christ, they are ‘profoundly aware that something spiritual has
happened, but just what that “something” is, is still unclear. I am
addressing the new convert, but I’m also thinking of those who have been
believing Christians for some time.'
What is the Lord’s Supper? Richard Phillips. The author is the senior
minister of First Presbyterian Church of Coral Springs (PCA) in Margate,
FL. Since the night Jesus instituted the Lord’s supper, this sacrament
has played a central role in the faith and practice of the church. That
is why it is odd that so many believers think so little of the Lord’s
supper. The goal of this booklet is to help readers understand the
biblical institution of this sacrament, the theological issues
surrounding it, and the pastoral considerations for administering and
receiving it.
Why do we Baptize Infants? Bryan Chapell. The author is president of
Covenant Theological Seminary, the seminary of the PCA, in St. Louis.
Biblical and pastoral, simple and accessible, this booklet explains in a
nontechnical style why we should baptize the infants of believing
parents. Chapell also shows pastors how to administer the sacrament in
ways that are manful and helpful in their churches.
What are Election and Predestination? Richard Philllips. See above for
author information. Election and predestination are the two most
maligned points of Reformed theology, with much ink spilled and many
sermons preached on these doctrines … With a pastor’s heart evident on
every page, Phillips unfolds the biblical teaching on these important
doctrines and reveals their practical application for the security,
humility, and joy of believers.
How Our Children Come
to Faith. Stephen Smallman. See above for author information.
This helpful, practical booklet encourages Christian parents to raise
their children in a spirit of faith rather than anxiety, emphasizing the
importance of bringing children to Jesus for his blessing. The author
goes on to explain the meaning of regeneration and conversion as they
relate to children raised in Christian families.
What is the Christian Worldview? Philip Graham Ryken. See above for
author information. What does Christianity have to do with ordinary
life? Is there a biblical perspective on our work or recreation or
whatever we do? If so, how can we gain that perspective? Many people
seek to have a biblical view of life, yet fail to apply that biblical
mindset, or worldview, to all parts of their lives. Ryken reveals the
basis of the Christina worldview and describes how it affects one’s view
of God, creation, the family, work, the arts, and other issues.

Reformed Church:
Stephen Smallman’s warmth and pastoral manner comes
through. … I am aware of no other resource that covers the same ground.
–Philip Ryken
True Calvinist:
A clear, biblical and beautiful summary of Calvinism and
the Reformed faith. This could be helpful to a new Christian as well as
older Christians … easy to read and accurate.
